Rhodonite
The name is derived from the Greek word, Rhodos, which translates into our word, Rose. It is highly prized in Russia and is also used and loved by American gem cutters for its lovely pink colors with black veinlets, which give it a beautifully mottled effect, this according to noted gemologist and author, John Sinkankas. What rockhounds and gem cutters find appealing is the variety of shades of pink and red that this stone produces, which in turn makes each piece of jewelry or art work excitingly distinctive. Rhodonite has seemed to fall out of popularity. I am not sure if this is because there are so many choices out there for rock cutters or if the mining supply has dwindled. I am hoping to renew interest in this beautiful stone by putting some of my rough stock into the marketplace starting in 2006. This is Californian Rhodonite and as you will see in the pictures below, each piece is unique and has its own character. I hope after viewing these stones you will buy a piece or two to try it for yourself. See items currently for sale at the South Fork Mining eBay Store. Enjoy the pictures.
